This painting depicts the life cycle of the native lonfin eel which inhabit the waters of the Waikato River flowing beneath this bridge. They were an important food source for the early maori and have a fascinating life cycle. Longfin Eel live for up to 60 years in rivers and streams before swimming out to the Pacific Ocean, somewhere near Tonga, and spawning once before dying.
